TikTok’s October 5 announcement extends shopping from its marketplace into the broader advertising experience. Shopping Assistant draws on merchant-provided information to answer product questions, while Buy Direct offers native checkout and in-app order tracking; brands remain the merchant of record. The tools are in eligibility-based testing, and Buy Direct requires integration with the Universal Commerce Protocol, so broad availability and adoption remain uncertain. The opportunity is substantial: eMarketer estimates TikTok Shop generated $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, about 18% of social commerce.
TikTok says Shopping Assistant can remember preferences during a conversation and help with questions about shipping, sizing, and availability.
TikTok names Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe among the commerce and payment integration partners for Buy Direct.
Advertisers interested in testing must contact their TikTok sales partner about eligibility and setup.
A product ad on TikTok can now lead to a conversation with an AI shopping assistant, not just a page to browse. On October 5, TikTok announced Shopping Assistant alongside Buy Direct, a one-click checkout experience. Together, they are designed to keep product research and purchasing inside the app—but access is through eligibility-based testing.
The two features tackle different reasons a shopper might stop short of buying. Shopping Assistant provides answers while someone considers a product; Buy Direct reduces the steps needed to pay. TikTok presents both as ways for brands to keep a potential customer engaged before interest fades.
Shopping Assistant appears as a chat window on a product page in TikTok’s in-app browser. Shoppers can ask questions and receive AI-generated answers based on information the merchant supplies. The experience sits close to the ad that prompted the visit, rather than requiring a separate search for product details.
TikTok’s example is a shopper considering hiking boots who wants to know about materials, fit and available colors. After getting answers, the shopper can continue to checkout on the merchant’s website, still within TikTok’s browser. That route keeps the app open without making the merchant’s checkout a native TikTok transaction.
TikTok also says the assistant remembers preferences and needs during a conversation and can help with shipping, sizing and availability, according to TechCrunch. Those are company-described capabilities. The merchant’s information is the stated basis for the product-page answers, an important distinction for shoppers weighing the guidance.
Buy Direct goes further than keeping a merchant website inside the browser. TikTok describes a native checkout with stored payment methods, saved addresses and in-app order tracking. It is intended to remove redirects, extra logins and manual entry at the point of purchase. Brands remain the merchant of record for transactions.
For merchants, that checkout requires integration with Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP—a standardized set of rules allowing AI agents and merchant systems to work together. TikTok names Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe among its commerce and payment integration partners. Advertisers interested in testing must contact their TikTok sales partner about eligibility and setup.
The announcement builds on an established shopping business. TikTok Shop launched in the U.S. in September 2023; eMarketer estimates it generated about $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, roughly 18% of U.S. social commerce. The new tools extend shopping assistance and checkout beyond that marketplace, into the broader app’s advertising experience.
