DoorDash automatically adds an AI-enhanced label when a restaurant uses the platform’s AI editing tool on a menu photo. The marker gives diners a signal about images changed inside DoorDash’s system, even as AI-generated or heavily edited food images elsewhere can be difficult to identify by sight.
DoorDash calls the feature AI Photo Enhance. Merchants begin with an existing menu image, choose an edit, preview it and submit it for the platform’s standard moderation and photo-review process. DoorDash says its policies prohibit misleading menu images.

Those options can make a real dish look more polished, but they also make the boundary between photography and synthetic-looking marketing less obvious. Jamie Soja, a professional food photographer, said even specialists can struggle to tell whether a food image was generated by AI or simply overedited.
The disclosure itself may affect the marketing result. In a 2024 study, Oxford experimental psychologist Charles Spence found consumers generally preferred AI-generated food images when they did not know a machine made them. Once told, they found those images less appealing.
That finding does not establish how DoorDash’s label affects orders. It does show that provenance can shape a diner’s reaction before a meal arrives. The issue is becoming more relevant as AI moves through restaurant operations: a 2026 National Restaurant Association report found 26% of operators use it for tasks including marketing, inventory, scheduling, menu optimization or taking orders.
DoorDash’s approach is narrow but concrete: it marks use of its own editing workflow and subjects the image to review. It does not provide a universal test for whether every restaurant image has been generated or altered with AI. For diners, the label turns an otherwise hidden production choice into visible menu information.
