OpenAI and Synopsys Sign Deal to Build AI That Operates Chip-Design Tools
GPT-Synopsys is intended to turn engineering objectives into tool-driven work. Early customer tests are underway, while engineers are expected to review and approve its output.
The planned system is meant to turn engineering objectives into actions inside Synopsys’ electronic-design-automation software, extending AI from assistance into chip-design workflows. The commercial arrangement is unusually integrated: OpenAI licenses Synopsys tools and provides infrastructure, while the companies will jointly market the product and share revenue. Semiconductor-customer trials are underway, but the proposed engineer-review workflow remains under development; the companies’ data-handling assurances are commitments, not independently verified protections.

OpenAI and Synopsys have signed a multi-year partnership to build an AI model that would operate chip-design software, not just answer questions about it. Called GPT-Synopsys, the planned model would reason about chip design and verification, then work directly with Synopsys tools. Early tests with semiconductor customers are underway, with engineers expected to set objectives and approve the output.
From a design objective to software action
Synopsys makes electronic design automation, or EDA, tools: the software engineers use to design computer chips and semiconductors. The partnership combines those tools with OpenAI’s AI technology.
The proposed division of labor starts with an engineer delegating a design objective. The model’s output then comes back for review and approval.
Synopsys software, OpenAI infrastructure
OpenAI is licensing Synopsys’ EDA tools for the project, and the model is planned to run on OpenAI’s infrastructure. The arrangement gives the collaboration a concrete software foundation. Synopsys supplies the engineering tools the model is meant to operate; OpenAI supplies the AI technology and the infrastructure on which the model will run.
A shared product and a shared sales effort
The agreement reaches beyond model development. OpenAI and Synopsys plan to market the product together and share revenue. Alongside the tool-licensing arrangement, that gives each company a role in the commercial effort. The partnership is therefore not simply OpenAI obtaining engineering software for its own use; it includes a jointly marketed product built around that software.
Early tests with semiconductor customers put the project into customer settings while development continues. They should not be read as proof that the full proposed workflow already succeeds.
Speed is the ambition, not the result
Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazi says AI could significantly accelerate chip design. OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman frames the collaboration as a route to better chips and better AI. Those positions emphasize different potential payoffs: faster engineering work for Synopsys and improved hardware for OpenAI.
