OpenAI Adds Role-Based Academy Courses With Assessments for AI Skills

OpenAI has expanded its Academy with role-based courses for developers, leaders, educators and college students, alongside its existing workplace-learning path. The company is positioning training as part of deploying AI: learners practice on real tasks, review outputs, and can earn a course badge by passing an assessment.

The new structure divides the catalog by the work people do. Apply AI at Work is aimed at knowledge workers; Build with AI serves developers and technical teams; Lead AI Adoption targets people responsible for strategy and change; and separate courses address teaching and college work. OpenAI says organizations can combine those paths for onboarding, technical training, executive programs and educational settings.

From individual prompts to supervised workflows

For knowledge workers, the curriculum begins with clearer instructions, relevant context and checking responses against the task. It then moves to reusable workflows and agent-directed work, where learners decide what to delegate and where human checkpoints belong. OpenAI says the employee remains responsible for the final result.

Different jobs, different adoption decisions

Build with AI covers work with Codex and the OpenAI API, including solution design, evaluations, agents, retrieving relevant information and running AI systems in production. The emphasis is not only on building a feature, but on planning changes across the software-development lifecycle while retaining review and quality control.

This expansion builds on Academy courses introduced in June, when OpenAI laid out a workplace sequence from AI fundamentals to repeatable workflows and agent-assisted work. The company says the new catalog will continue to change with its models, products and guidance. That makes the Academy both a training library and an effort to establish shared working habits as AI tools evolve.

For organizations, the unresolved question is whether a role-based curriculum and a passed assessment translate into better judgment on real work.
