Amazon Blocks Meta’s Muse From Shopping on Its Marketplace
Amazon says the agent reached its site without notice, failed to identify itself and created credential-security concerns. Meta’s prior description of Muse disputes a key part of that risk framing.

3 key pointsAmazon has cut off Meta’s Muse from Amazon.com, arguing that the shopping agent accessed the marketplace without disclosure, failed to identify itself, and may retain customer credentials. Meta says credentials are stored securely and hidden from Muse, but that does not address Amazon’s separate demand for consent to agent access. Amazon has blocked Meta’s Muse from shopping on Amazon.com and asked Meta to remove the marketplace from the agent’s experience. The dispute puts a practical limit on personal AI agents: a retailer can reject an agent even when it is acting for a customer.
Amazon objects to the way Muse arrived
Amazon says Meta did not tell it that Muse would access the marketplace. It also says the agent does not identify itself while browsing and appears to capture and store customer credentials, creating potential privacy and security risks. Amazon displayed a warning that access by an unauthorized AI agent violates its terms of service.
Credential controls do not settle site access
Meta’s statement addresses what Muse can see when users provide credentials. Amazon’s objection is broader: whether the agent disclosed itself and whether the marketplace agreed to participate. Amazon says third-party applications that make purchases for customers should operate openly and respect a service provider’s decision on participation.
Amazon says it is discussing the issue with Meta and has requested the company remove Amazon from Muse. It declined to say whether it would consider legal action.
A disagreement between commercial partners
The block comes despite existing ties between the companies. Amazon products have been purchasable through Facebook and Instagram since 2023, and Meta agreed in April to a multibillion-dollar arrangement to run agentic AI workloads on Amazon’s cloud. Those relationships have not given Muse a place in Amazon’s consumer shopping interface.
Muse launched on September 8 and became the most-downloaded free app in the U.S. App Store within a week, according to The Decoder. Amazon has separately pursued restrictions involving Perplexity’s Comet and pushed to block shopping agents from Google and OpenAI.
The Muse dispute extends Amazon’s resistance to outside shopping agents to a company with which it also has major commercial arrangements. The immediate test is not whether agents can complete purchases in theory, but whether platforms will admit them on terms the platforms control.
