OpenAI inks deal with Axel Springer on licensing news for model training

Axel Springer, a leading media and technology company, has partnered with OpenAI to enhance independent journalism using artificial intelligence (AI). This collaboration is aimed at integrating recent and authoritative content from Axel Springer's media brands, such as POLITICO, BUSINESS INSIDER, BILD, and WELT, into ChatGPT. Users of ChatGPT will have access to summaries of selected global news, including some paid content, with attribution and links to full articles for transparency.

The partnership also supports Axel Springer’s AI-driven ventures and contributes to the training of OpenAI's language models with quality content from Axel Springer's media outlets. This marks a significant effort to use AI to improve content experiences, create new financial opportunities, and support the sustainability of journalism.

Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer, emphasizes the aim to elevate journalism's quality, societal relevance, and business model through AI. Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI, notes that this partnership will offer new ways to access quality, real-time news content through AI tools and will benefit publishers and creators globally.

The updates to Midjourney, an AI image generation tool, have introduced several user-friendly features, making it simpler and more intuitive to craft image prompts:

OpenAI Startup Fund launches second Converge startup cohort

The OpenAI Startup Fund launched "Converge," a program aimed at accelerating startups at the forefront of AI evolution. It started in December 2022, and is now accepting applications for its second cohort, "Converge 2." This six-week program is designed for exceptional engineers, designers, researchers, and product builders using AI to innovate. Participants will engage in tech talks, office hours, social events, and discussions with leading AI practitioners. They will also receive a $1 million investment from the OpenAI Startup Fund and join a community of builders.

The program is open to founders of all backgrounds, disciplines, and experience levels, including those from underrepresented groups and outside the United States. AI experience is not a prerequisite. The application deadline is Friday, January 26, 2024, at 11:59 PM Pacific. The cohort size will be 10-15 companies, and products do not need to be built on OpenAI’s APIs.

The program runs from March 11 to April 19, 2024, requiring a commitment of 4-6 hours per week. It will be held partly in San Francisco (first and last weeks, with covered travel costs) and can be completed remotely during other weeks, though in-person attendance is recommended.
