Mark Gurman Maps Apple’s Reported Path From iPhone AI to New Devices

Apple’s iPhone-first AI strategy is a bridge, not necessarily a destination. In a new interview with The Verge, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said Apple is leaning on the iPhone as its AI device while it develops a reported wave of home and wearable hardware that could eventually give its assistant a different place to live.

The distinction is the fresh point in Gurman’s assessment of John Ternus’s first major product event as Apple CEO. Apple introduced the foldable iPhone Duo and cast the phone as an “intelligent personal hub,” but Gurman said the event brought no notable new AI feature. Instead, it gave Apple Intelligence, first launched in 2024, a more forceful narrative.

The iPhone carries the strategy for now

Apple’s own iPhone Duo announcement puts that message into a product: the company says the device combines Apple Intelligence 2 and Siri AI with a user’s personal context, while Siri AI rolls out in beta with iOS 27. Ternus has also argued that the iPhone can pair on-device AI work with access to cloud models, while privacy distinguishes Apple’s approach.

A home hub would test that premise

Gurman said the first of Apple’s AI-native products could be a smart-home hub with a square screen and a new operating system centered on Siri interaction. He described intercom and video-conferencing functions, plus proactive intelligence that could recognize an approaching person and show content tailored to them. That would make household presence and shared context central to the device, rather than secondary functions of a phone.

The reported hardware beyond the hub

• A home-security system and a robotic-arm version of the home hub.
• Smart glasses, which Gurman expects Apple to introduce and ship in 2027.
• Camera-equipped AirPods and other wearables.

The harder product test

The roadmap remains Gurman’s reporting, not an Apple announcement, and his 2027 glasses timetable is explicitly an expectation. But it clarifies the strategic tension behind Apple’s current pitch: the iPhone can be the company’s immediate AI center, yet a home display, glasses, or sensor-equipped earbuds would ask users to encounter an assistant through different environments and inputs. Whether those products arrive and establish a compelling reason to do so is the next test of the narrative Ternus introduced.
