Anthropic has widened its Claude for Startups program, which launched in May, as it competes with OpenAI and Google for startup customers. The offer combines team access and API funding with implementation support, giving eligible companies both a way to use Claude internally and resources to build products with it. For founders, the practical value depends on meeting one of two time-based eligibility tests and on whether the five-seat limit and one-time credit fit their needs.
Eligibility requires either founding within the past five years or receiving funding within the past two years; startups do not need to meet both tests.
Participants can access up to $45,000 in discounts and credits through the Claude Startup Stack; that figure is separate from the $1,000 Claude API credit.
Anthropic also offers Applied AI office hours, community events, and access to Claude Marketplace for building plug-ins.
Anthropic is offering startups a year of free Claude access, but the offer has a defined scope: up to five premium seats on Claude Team and a one-time $1,000 developer credit. The October 6, 2026 expansion of Claude for Startups pairs those subsidies with technical support and other benefits for eligible companies.
The program first launched in May. Anthropic says thousands of companies already participate, and the expansion opens it to more organizations. This is an extension of an existing startup program, rather than the first time the company has offered founders help building with Claude.
Startups can apply if they were founded within the last five years or received funding within the last two years, according to Anthropic. Those are alternative routes, not two requirements a company must meet together. Eligible companies can submit an application through the Claude for Startups program page.
The main benefits serve two different uses. Claude Team is Anthropic’s paid plan for groups, and the free year covers up to five premium seats. The separate API credit supports building with Claude through its application programming interface—the developer route for accessing the models.
Anthropic also says members can receive up to $45,000 in discounts and credits through the Claude Startup Stack. It describes that stack as benefits for the tools a startup runs on. The larger figure is a ceiling on a package of discounts and credits, not the size of the one-time Claude API credit.
We created this program because we believe the benefits of AI will reach most people through the companies that build on top of models, rather than through the models alone.
Anthropic, in its announcement
Anthropic explicitly links the program to closer partnerships with founders and developers. Its stated rationale is that companies building on models will deliver much of AI’s benefit to users. The offer therefore reaches beyond giving a small team a subscription: it also supports developers building products with Claude.
That effort sits within an established business competition. CNBC reports that the vast majority of Anthropic’s revenue comes from business customers, while OpenAI and Google also offer startup programs. Founders are an audience all three companies are already trying to reach.
