Donald Trump has won the 2024 presidential election, and the tech industry is bracing for the impact of a second term. Elon Musk, a vocal supporter of Trump, stands to gain immensely. Musk not only endorsed Trump but also heavily promoted his campaign on X (formerly Twitter), positioning himself as the most influential businessman in the new administration. His close ties with Trump may lead to significant regulatory advantages for his companies like Tesla and SpaceX, and potentially even a formal role within the administration.

Trump's re-election will also have considerable effects on other tech giants. Many CEOs, including Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, are expected to adopt a friendlier approach toward Trump, learning from the consequences they faced during his first term for opposing his policies. However, Google might continue to struggle under a Trump administration due to ongoing conservative grievances regarding bias. Crypto companies, on the other hand, are likely to see a favorable environment, with regulatory burdens being reduced and SEC head Gary Gensler possibly removed.

Trump’s second term could also mean fewer antitrust actions against big tech, with key Biden-era enforcers like Lina Khan expected to be ousted. While most social media companies are likely to adapt to avoid conflict with the administration, platforms like X will continue to amplify right-leaning content. On the A.I. front, Trump is likely to encourage rapid progress, with minimal regulatory interference, favoring American tech leadership in the field. Despite potential downsides like stricter immigration and social policies, Trump’s acceptance among some tech elites could shift Silicon Valley's political landscape, making it more of a battleground for diverse political ideologies.

OpenAI has officially acquired Chat.com, adding yet another high-profile domain to its expanding portfolio. As of this morning, visitors to Chat·com are redirected to OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT. The acquisition was confirmed by an OpenAI spokesperson via email, though the company hasn’t disclosed how much it paid for the domain.

Chat·com, one of the older domains on the internet, was originally registered in September 1996. Last year, it gained attention when HubSpot co-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah reportedly purchased it for $15.5 million, placing it among the highest publicly reported domain sales ever. In March of this year, Shah revealed that he had sold the domain to an unnamed buyer.

Late yesterday, Shah confirmed in a post on X that OpenAI was indeed the buyer, hinting that he received OpenAI shares as part of the payment. Despite the acquisition, there’s no indication that OpenAI is rebranding ChatGPT to Chat·com, and the domain's change appears to be more about creating an accessible pathway to ChatGPT rather than a broader brand transition.

Microsoft is bringing AI-powered text editing to Notepad, the simple text editor that’s been around since 1983. The new feature, called "Rewrite," is currently rolling out in preview to Windows Insiders. This tool will let users rephrase sentences, adjust tone, and modify the length of their content directly in Notepad. To use the feature, you simply highlight the text, right-click it, and select "Rewrite." Notepad will then offer three revised versions that users can choose from. Notably, this feature requires a Microsoft account for access, as it operates through a cloud-based service.

This isn’t the only update Microsoft is making to its classic tools. The company is also introducing AI image-editing capabilities to Paint. The new features, "Generative Fill" and "Generative Erase," allow users to make modifications to images based on prompts. Generative Fill can insert new elements into an image, while Generative Erase can remove unwanted parts and seamlessly blend the background.

The rollout for Generative Fill will start with testers who have Copilot Plus PCs, but Generative Erase will be available to all Insiders using Windows 11. These updates highlight Microsoft's push to modernize even its most basic tools by integrating AI, making them more powerful and versatile for users.
