OpenAI's new AI model, "o1," has achieved a significant milestone by scoring around 120 on the Norway Mensa IQ test, far surpassing previous models. In a recent test, it got 25 out of 35 questions right, which is notably better than most humans. One of the hardest questions involved recognizing patterns in a grid, and although o1's reasoning was different from a typical human approach, it arrived at the correct answer, demonstrating advanced reasoning capabilities. However, it still makes mistakes, as seen when it missed a familiar pattern on a different question.

A critical factor in these tests is ensuring the AI doesn't benefit from pre-existing training data. To address this, custom questions were created that had never been publicly available, and o1 still performed impressively. This suggests that its improved performance is genuine and not just a result of memorization. Despite some limitations, like struggles with AI vision, the leap in reasoning ability marks a massive breakthrough in AI intelligence.

This rapid progression also suggests future models could achieve even higher IQ scores. With estimates predicting AI IQ surpassing 140 within a few years, OpenAI's advancements are progressing faster than many anticipated. While there are still challenges ahead, the rise in AI intelligence could have significant implications for technology and industries, including AI stocks and chip-makers.

Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison recently shared his vision for a future dominated by AI-powered surveillance during a company financial meeting, reports Business Insider. Ellison described a world where AI systems would constantly monitor citizens through a network of cameras and drones, ensuring that both police and civilians behave appropriately. By analyzing footage from various sources like security cameras and police body cams, Ellison believes that AI could automatically detect and report crimes, creating a society where "we are constantly recording and reporting everything that's going on."

While Ellison emphasized the benefits of AI-driven oversight, his remarks have sparked concerns about privacy and civil liberties. His vision of universal surveillance resembles the dystopian world depicted in George Orwell's 1984, where constant government monitoring suppresses independent thought and privacy. Such AI surveillance is already a reality in parts of the world, like China, where automated systems collect and organize data on citizens, raising fears of "digital totalitarianism."

Ellison also mentioned AI’s potential in law enforcement, including replacing police vehicles with AI-controlled drones in high-speed pursuits. However, he noted that the development of such systems would depend on access to powerful hardware, especially GPUs, which are in high demand. Despite challenges, Ellison predicted that AI investment would skyrocket, with companies spending billions over the next five years on developing and training AI models.

World Labs is a newly launched company focused on building spatial intelligence AI through the development of Large World Models (LWMs). While AI models today primarily operate in the 2D realm, World Labs aims to extend this capability to full 3D spaces, enabling AI to perceive, generate, and interact with the physical and virtual worlds much like humans do. Founded by AI visionary Fei-Fei Li and a team of experts in computer vision and graphics, the company brings together top talent to push the boundaries of what AI can achieve in understanding and reasoning about 3D environments.

The company’s mission is to develop spatially intelligent AI that can model and interact with 3D spaces, driving the next generation of creative and professional tools for designers, developers, and engineers. World Labs sees this as an opportunity to elevate AI from 2D images and videos to limitless 3D worlds that are rich with physics, semantics, and user control. This vision will unlock new possibilities for creativity and invention, allowing users to build and edit their own virtual spaces with unprecedented ease.

Supported by $230M in funding from leading investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, NEA, and Radical Ventures, World Labs is rapidly advancing its technology. The company is uniquely positioned to translate its research in AI, computer vision, and graphics into real-world applications. As World Labs continues to grow, it aims to deliver powerful AI models that work alongside humans to transform how we interact with and shape our environments.
