OpenAI has introduced a new beta feature called Tasks in ChatGPT, designed to handle scheduled actions and reminders. Rolling out to Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers, the feature aims to transform ChatGPT into a digital assistant akin to Siri or Google Assistant but with more advanced language capabilities. With Tasks, users can schedule actions like receiving daily weather updates, reminders about important dates, or even light-hearted tasks like joke prompts. The feature also allows proactive task suggestions based on chat interactions, which users must approve. Accessible via the web, Tasks offers a dedicated management section for easy modifications and cancellations, with notifications available across web, desktop, and mobile.

While scheduling is a standard feature in virtual assistants, this addition represents a shift for ChatGPT, expanding its real-time conversational capabilities into ongoing task management. OpenAI’s strategic move aligns with broader efforts to monetize AI infrastructure, offering these features exclusively to premium subscribers for now. The addition of Tasks complements OpenAI’s plans for more ambitious projects, such as “Operator,” an autonomous AI agent, and “Caterpillar,” a tool for handling more complex tasks like navigating websites and accessing documents. However, the feature’s beta status indicates that OpenAI is still refining its reliability and functionality.

The introduction of Tasks reflects a growing emphasis on "agentic" AI, designed to operate independently in various contexts. While the feature currently functions like an advanced script following explicit instructions, OpenAI’s long-term goal is to develop systems capable of interacting with environments, learning, and adapting without constant user input. However, concerns about reliability remain, especially for time-sensitive tasks. As the feature evolves, it may redefine the role of AI assistants, but for now, users are advised to experiment cautiously while OpenAI gathers feedback during the beta phase.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, revealed plans to begin automating the work of midlevel software engineers as early as 2025. Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience, Zuckerberg stated that advancements in artificial intelligence would enable AI systems to perform tasks typically assigned to midlevel engineers, including writing and maintaining code. He noted that while this transition might involve significant initial costs, it could eventually lead to AI systems being responsible for all the coding in Meta's apps. Currently, midlevel software engineers at Meta earn salaries nearing mid-six figures, highlighting the financial incentives for such automation.

In addition to automation, Meta announced significant changes to its operational strategies. The company plans to phase out third-party fact-checkers in favor of "community notes," a model inspired by Elon Musk's approach on X (formerly Twitter). While Zuckerberg presented the move as a step toward greater community engagement, it has sparked criticism from fact-checking organizations, with many expressing concerns about potential misinformation and a "step backward" for the platform. The policy shift aligns with Meta's decision to reintroduce more political content, a move that has further polarized public opinion.

Meta is also scaling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. A memo from Janelle Gale, the company's vice president of human resources, confirmed that the DEI team would be disbanded, signaling a broader shift in Meta’s corporate priorities. These changes reflect a larger trend within the company to streamline operations while leveraging AI technology, though critics argue that such decisions may undermine the company’s commitment to social responsibility.

OpenAI is reviving its robotics ambitions with plans to develop its own robots, as revealed by a recent social media post from Caitlin Kalinowski, the company's hardware director. Kalinowski, who joined OpenAI last November from Meta’s AR glasses division, announced that the robotics team would focus on creating "general-purpose," "adaptive," and "versatile" robots. These robots are intended to function with human-like intelligence in dynamic, real-world environments. The company also plans to develop custom sensors and computational components to complement its internally developed AI models.

Job listings published by OpenAI highlight the breadth of this effort, suggesting a focus on blending high-level AI capabilities with the physical constraints of robotic platforms. The team is exploring various robotic form factors, with hints of humanoid designs and potential production on a large scale, as one listing seeks engineers experienced in designing systems for manufacturing over a million units. OpenAI also plans to employ contract workers to test prototypes, underlining its push toward scaling operations. Reports have suggested that OpenAI may be building humanoid robots, potentially aligning with the growing interest in general-purpose robots across the industry.

OpenAI's robotics initiative comes at a time of growing investment in the sector, with over $6.4 billion raised by robotics companies last year. Firms like Bright Machines and Bear Robotics have carved out niches in factory automation and service robotics, while humanoid robot developers, including OpenAI-backed X1 and Figure, aim to mass-produce robots with human-like movement. Beyond robotics, OpenAI is expanding its hardware portfolio, working with Jony Ive on a new device and reportedly designing custom chips for its AI models. Despite historical challenges in robotics, OpenAI's aggressive plans signal a strong belief in the potential for innovative, scalable robotic systems.
