Apple announced at WWDC 2024 that it will be integrating ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot, into Siri and other first-party apps across its operating systems. This collaboration aims to enhance user experience by leveraging ChatGPT's expertise in various scenarios. For instance, users can ask Siri for meal ideas using ingredients from their garden, and with permission, Siri will use ChatGPT to provide suggestions.
In addition to Siri, ChatGPT will be integrated into system-wide tools like Writing Tools, enabling users to create content, including images, or get revisions and variations for their initial ideas. Users can also include photos with their questions or seek answers related to their documents or PDFs. These features will be available on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year, free of charge and without the need for a ChatGPT or OpenAI account.
OpenAI's recently introduced flagship generative AI model, GPT-4o, will power these integrations. Premium ChatGPT features will be accessible within Siri and other Apple apps for subscribers of OpenAI's ChatGPT premium plans. Apple assures that privacy protections are built into these integrations, with OpenAI not storing requests and users' IP addresses being obscured.

Elon Musk has threatened to ban iPhones from his companies due to Apple's new integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT, announced at WWDC 2024. Musk expressed concerns on social media platform X, suggesting that the integration could compromise user privacy by deeply embedding OpenAI into Apple's operating system. He argued that even though Apple and OpenAI assured users that their data is only shared with ChatGPT after explicit permission, he believes that this setup still poses significant privacy risks.
Apple's integration allows users to interact with ChatGPT through Siri, asking questions or sharing documents and photos with the AI after granting permission. This feature aims to provide seamless access to ChatGPT without opening the app, enhancing user convenience. Despite reassurances from Apple and OpenAI that user data is not logged and that users have control over their information, Musk remains skeptical, advocating for AI capabilities to remain confined to dedicated apps rather than being integrated at the OS level.
Musk's criticisms extend to Apple's claim of protecting user privacy while using third-party AI, which he views as contradictory. He also highlighted that if users could select their preferred AI for Siri or writing tools, his stance might differ, especially if it involved his own xAI's Grok. Apple also introduced system-wide access to ChatGPT for writing assistance, further integrating the AI into its ecosystem. Despite the privacy safeguards, Musk's strong opposition underscores the ongoing debate over the balance between AI innovation and user privacy.

Paleontologists and paleoartists are increasingly concerned about the use of AI in creating depictions of prehistoric animals, arguing that AI-generated images often lack the scientific accuracy and nuanced understanding required for such illustrations. Paleoart, which is informed by extensive research into fossil records, musculoskeletal structures, and evolutionary relationships, provides a critical window into understanding ancient life. Unlike human illustrators, AI lacks the ability to incorporate this complex data accurately, resulting in depictions that can mislead the public and undermine the educational value of paleoart.
AI technology, while beneficial in various scientific fields such as astronomy and archaeology, poses significant challenges in paleontology. AI has been useful in tasks like segmenting CT scans of fossils and categorizing microscopic fossils, but its application in creating visual representations of extinct animals is problematic. For instance, AI-generated images have sometimes resulted in anatomically incorrect depictions, such as a rat with exaggerated features or dinosaurs with implausible physical traits. This misrepresentation not only distorts scientific understanding but also threatens the livelihoods of skilled paleoartists who bring both artistic and scientific expertise to their work.
To address these issues, there is a growing call for guidelines to govern the use of AI in scientific communication. Scientists emphasize the need for transparent disclosure when AI is used, rigorous verification of AI-generated content, and ethical considerations in its application. Such measures are crucial to maintaining the integrity of scientific illustrations and ensuring that the public receives accurate and reliable information. As AI continues to evolve, it is imperative to balance its advantages with the need to preserve the accuracy and quality of scientific visual communication.
