OpenAI has announced a significant partnership with PwC, making the management consulting giant its largest customer and first resale partner for ChatGPT’s enterprise tier. This deal covers 100,000 PwC employees in the U.S., U.K., and the Middle East, potentially expanding to 328,000 employees globally. The enterprise tier, launched in August 2023, offers enhanced features such as faster interactions, unlimited usage, and more customizable models, aimed at making generative AI a substantial investment for businesses.
PwC views this partnership as a strategic move to evolve its business and capitalize on the growth opportunities in digital transformation. Bret Greenstein, PwC's partner and generative AI leader, emphasized that adopting ChatGPT will not threaten jobs but will allow the company to scale its operations more efficiently. PwC has been an early adopter of ChatGPT and sees the enterprise tier as a natural progression to enhance engagement and build more sophisticated tools for its employees.
This partnership marks a pivotal moment for OpenAI as it aims to penetrate industry verticals and offer comprehensive services through its partner ecosystem. With PwC's commitment to reselling ChatGPT enterprise, OpenAI is positioned to support a broader range of businesses in deploying generative AI solutions. Although specific pricing details were not disclosed, this collaboration underscores the growing importance of generative AI in transforming business processes and driving new consulting opportunities.
The Atlantic and Vox Media have signed separate licensing and product deals with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. These agreements allow OpenAI to use the publishers' archived and current content to train its AI models and respond to user queries, with appropriate citations and links to the original articles. These deals provide OpenAI with credible content for its algorithms while protecting it from potential copyright issues.
The partnerships also enable The Atlantic and Vox Media to utilize OpenAI's technology to develop new AI-driven journalism products. The Atlantic will experiment with AI features through its Atlantic Labs initiative, collaborating with other AI firms and providing feedback to OpenAI. Vox Media plans to use OpenAI's tech for internal data platform enhancements and content discovery improvements on its websites, including optimizing advertising and matching shoppers with recommendations.
These agreements reflect a trend among major news companies to collaborate with OpenAI rather than pursue litigation. Such partnerships may offer quicker and potentially more lucrative returns than lawsuits. The Atlantic's CEO highlighted the future importance of AI in web navigation, contrasting with organizations like The New York Times, which have chosen to sue OpenAI for substantial damages instead of striking deals.
Mistral, a French AI startup valued at $6 billion and backed by Microsoft, has unveiled its first generative AI model for coding, named Codestral. Designed to assist developers in writing and interacting with code, Codestral supports over 80 programming languages, including Python, Java, C++, and JavaScript. It can complete coding functions, write tests, fill in partial code, and answer questions about a codebase in English. Despite being labeled as "open," its license restricts commercial use and internal business activities, likely due to potential training on copyrighted content.
However, Codestral's practicality is questionable. The model, with its 22 billion parameters, demands a powerful PC to operate and shows only incremental performance improvements over competitors. Although it surpasses some benchmarks, these are often unreliable. Generative AI tools like Codestral are gaining popularity among developers, with a Stack Overflow poll indicating 44% already use such tools and 26% plan to adopt them soon. Nevertheless, these tools can introduce more errors and amplify existing bugs, as highlighted by an analysis of 150 million lines of code and a Purdue study on ChatGPT's programming responses.
Despite these challenges, Mistral continues to push forward, launching a hosted version of Codestral on its Le Chat conversational AI platform and offering a paid API. The company has also integrated Codestral into various app frameworks and development environments, including LlamaIndex, LangChain, Continue·dev, and Tabnine. This move aims to capture mindshare and monetize their model amidst ongoing debates about the reliability and wisdom of using code-generating AI as programming assistants.
Discord has emerged as a pivotal platform in the generative AI boom, with companies like Viggle leveraging its infrastructure to rapidly scale their user base. Viggle, a startup specializing in controllable video generation, allows users to upload a video and a photo, generating an AI-driven video of a person replicating the movements. This has led to viral content such as AI-generated clips of celebrities and characters performing intricate dance moves. Viggle's growth has been exponential, reaching over 3 million members on Discord, surpassing popular game communities like Valorant and Genshin Impact.
Viggle's success illustrates how generative AI tools are being adopted for both entertainment and practical applications. While memes dominate much of the content, professionals in game design and visual effects use Viggle to create quick animation assets, significantly reducing production time. This dual utility underscores the platform's versatility, attracting diverse user groups. The collaboration with Discord has been essential, providing the necessary support and infrastructure for Viggle to handle its rapid expansion.
For Discord, hosting generative AI startups presents both opportunities and challenges. These companies contribute to increased user engagement and diversity on the platform but also demand significant resources to manage the high volume of video content and ensure effective content moderation. Despite these challenges, Discord's robust infrastructure and established guidelines help accommodate the rapid growth of AI-focused communities, supporting startups like Viggle in their developmental stages.
