They Fled San Francisco. The A.I. Boom Pulled Them Back. [Link]

Tech entrepreneurs who left the Bay Area during the pandemic say they can’t afford to miss out on the funding, hackathons and networking of the artificial intelligence frenzy.

Doug Fulop’s and Jessie Fischer’s lives in Bend, Ore., were idyllic. The couple moved there last year, working remotely in a 2,400-square-foot house surrounded by trees, with easy access to skiing, mountain biking and breweries. It was an upgrade from their former apartments in San Francisco, where a stranger once entered Mr. Fulop’s home after his lock didn’t properly latch.

But the pair of tech entrepreneurs are now on their way back to the Bay Area, driven by a key development: the artificial intelligence boom.

Mr. Fulop and Ms. Fischer are both starting companies that use A.I. technology and are looking for co-founders. They tried to make it work in Bend, but after too many eight-hour drives to San Francisco for hackathons, networking events and meetings, they decided to move back when their lease ends in August. Marc Andreessen predicts that children will have their own A.I.-powered tutors with ‘the machine version of infinite love’ [Link]

Marc Andreessen, the co-founder of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, predicts that artificial intelligence (AI) will make life better in all aspects, including jobs, social inequality, and children's education. He envisages AI tutors providing individualized instruction to students, assisting in their learning process with 'infinite patience and knowledge.'

Andreessen views investing in AI development as a "moral obligation," with potential transformative effects across multiple fields such as science, business, and arts. He foresees AI boosting productivity across sectors, promoting economic growth and wage increases over time.

However, Andreessen also dismisses concerns about AI, calling fears surrounding the technology "unfounded." He explains that AI is merely a tool and cannot have goals or desires. Though he acknowledges that AI can facilitate cybercrime and fake content creation, he also believes it can provide solutions to these same issues.

Despite Andreessen's optimism about AI's benefits, he warns against a government-protected "cartel" that could hinder competition from smaller companies. He advocates for government partnerships but argues against regulations that might slow AI's spread. His views contrast with other tech leaders who advocate for a careful approach to AI development and its potential risks, with some calling for greater government oversight.

A million-dollar Banksy got investors 32% returns?[Link]

Mm-hmm, sure. So, what’s the catch?

We know it may sound too good to be true. But it’s not only possible, it’s happening—and thousands of investors are smiling all the way to the bank, thanks to the fine-art investing platform Masterworks.

These results aren’t cherry-picking. This is the whole bushel. Masterworks has built a track record of 8 exits, the last 3 realizing 10.4%, 35%, and 13.9% net returns even while financial markets plummeted.

But art? Really? Okay, skeptics, here are the numbers. Contemporary art prices:

  • Outpaced the S&P 500 by 131% over the last 26 years

  • Have the lowest correlation to equities of any asset class

  • Remained stable through the dot-com bubble and the ’08 crisis

Can Time be used as a Currency? How did IKEA turn Time into Money? [Link]

Ikea launched an innovative campaign called "Buy With Your Time," allowing customers to pay for their purchases with the time they spent traveling to the store. The campaign was based on the insight that most Ikea stores are located far from city centers, adding a friction point for customers who need to make a long drive.

In this campaign, the more time customers spent traveling to the store, the more "time currency" they earned, which could be used to buy Ikea products. For instance, an hour's drive could be converted into currency sufficient to purchase a Lack Coffee Table, while a two-hour drive could earn a Billy bookshelf. The amount of "time currency" accumulated by customers was calculated using their Google Maps history.

The initiative was successful in converting a potential negative (travel time) into a positive, encouraging customers to spend more time at the store and transforming friction into satisfaction. The campaign significantly increased foot traffic by 32% and earned over $14 million in free media coverage.
